(*) Tiwanaku is an archeological site located 45 minutes away from La Paz. It is believed it was the center of a culture based on cattle breeding and agriculture and whose main characteristic was a delicate ornamented astronomically oriented architecture of relieves and plains. This culture settled in the Titicaca Lake surroundings. It is also believed that the Tiwanacota culture had a lake port at Titicaca Lake (at the moment, it lies 20 Km away from it)
The ruins of Tiwanaku are made up by seven buildings: Kalasasaya semi subterranean Temple, Akapana, Kantatallita, Kerikala Putuni and Puma Punku Pyramids. This culture also excelled in pottery and textiles. They left behind famous “QUEROS” – ceremonial cups, HUACOS – tridimensional human portraits in vases.
This culture started 1500 to 1400 B.C. and collapsed between 1100 and 1200 A.D. Because of its old age, some scholars proposed that it was the cradle of all American civilizations, while others believe it was the capital city of a megalithic empire or a mega empire that spread through the central Andes.
Day 2:
After breakfast, visit Visit the Sun Island – cradle of the Inca Empire. On this legendary island you will visit the Inca Palace of Pilkokaina; afterwards, you will visit the garden, the stairway and the Inca´s fountain.
Then you will ascend to Yumani town where a magnificent sight of the lake and Royal Andes range could be seen.
